TODAY'S LIST OF NEW THINGS I DO THAT MAKE ME LAUGH
1. I carry one of those thermos things to work every day. Does anyone get why that's funny? It's like... it's like why people wear baseball hats. Or those square-ish glasses. The thermos is truly an accessory to a perfect morning outfit. And I joined the fad, along with car keys and NPR.
2. I'm running a mile race on Thanksgiving morning. So funny. So I guess I'm a runner now. Yesterday I checked myself out while stretching. Yep. Mp3 player hooked on, complete with white chorded earplugs, new balance shoes, and a 5 mile route around the neighbhorhood. It's too funny, and I refuse to stop laughing at myself.
3. I walk around a government hospital with very good posture, lipstick and dreadlocks. I FEEL the stares, and I use it to my advantage. People don't know what to think... am I a bum? A hippie? Or a professional? They're racking their paradigms to see where I fit. I use their mental stuttering to my advantage by living my professionality. It's fun to watch them break their own paradigm and create a new slot for me.
4. I go to bed at 10:00 p.m. Let me just say that again, because I just can't believe it. I go to bed at 10:00 p.m. I'm shaking my head in disbelief. Gone are my 1:00 a.m. alone times. I truly and very seriously mourn the loss. I used those hours to plan all the ways I was going to change the world. Can that happen at 9:30 p.m.?
5. I live in Utah. Doesn't that crack you up? I see about two or three of you nodding your heads. I'm looking out my window right now and yep, no doubt about it, that's Salt Lake City. It's not Seoul, it's not Bangalore, it's not Portland, or Missoula. It's Pioneer Land, it's Mormontown, it's no where I've ever wanted to be. But wow...did you know that Salt Lake has secrets to tell me? I haven't ever been quiet enough to hear them. I've always whooshed right through this town on my way to somewhere bigger and better. But whoa friends... I'm sitting here listening and well, it's good stuff. Very good stuff.
What is something new you do lately?

I have been making "dates" and apointments with women I don't even know just for the adventure of it. Yesterday I had lucnh with three 50 yr old women. Today I went out with a darling french woman I met on craigslist! I have never before felt so determined to make friends, darn it, and feel good in a place I hate.
I am in awe of you, Em! Wow and wow some more.
Hey M
I think sometimes in life we learn a lot about ourselves when we travel, but when we travel its easy to be distracted by everything that is new or different. I think we learn the most about ourselves at home, cause it allows a different type of reflection if you let it.
It easy to be part of an exciting cause in an exciting foreign place. Its a lot harder at home, where its easier to simple blend into society and old habbits and conform. Its when you sitting at home in Utah looking at the window at 9:30pm just before you go to bed and a cause means a lot to you and you do something about it that you can say that you are committed to the cause.
I am learning to go to bed at 9 PM (and struggle to stay awake that late!), I am learning just how subjective teaching is, I waking up at 5 AM and organizing myself in file folders and letting go of things I thought I shouldn't/couldn't let go of.
Jason, you NAILED that. You're so right.
Stargirl, I'm glad you posted. I thought about you this morning (ha! ironically as I was carrying my little thermos thing to work!) ...and I missed you and James deeply.
Emily, you commented only a couple minutes after I posted! It feels so so so good to have such an active reader like you.
Latin Dancing can now be added to your list, both to laugh at and to marvel at...
You flow.
i love the thermos!
