Amberlynn Lane in behalf of James Crawford: Corvallis, Oregon.
Her dream...
To show young people with dreams that they CAN find love and support to fulfill their dreams.
The idea that those without financial means should be left out of quality arts education and experiences has always broken my heart. It is unacceptable that a young person should be kept from a dream of their own just because they can't afford it. James Crawford, a high school student, life changed when he joined choir in high school. He transformed from a shy boy with low self-esteem and a weak voice, to someone who leads others as he sings out with passion. Encouraged by his classroom teacher to "just go for it and worry about money later," he auditioned for a national honor choir in Washington D.C., and was one of only 100 students across the country selected to go. He now faces a financial obstacle, as his parents, who are supportive in spirit, cannot support him financially. I have coached him in drafting a letter to find service organizations to sponsor him, but the dark cloud known as fear of failure looms around his countenance.
My dream is to show him that people will rally to provide him with this amazing opportunity. I am trying to find him as many sponsors as possible, to shower him with the confidence he could use to go far in chasing his dream. Any money I raise will go in direct sponsorship to him. He needs at least $1,200 to help defray the costs of trip from Oregon to D.C., but more would not hurt. (He could always use money for music lessons, food, and toward college.) I want him to know that the Universe believes in him.
Time period needed for project:James would leave for Washington D.C. in early June of 2010, but the earlier he sees support, the more confident he will feel. Here is further information:http://www.menc.org/news/view/press-release-menc-national-honor-ensembles-to-debut-in-june-2010
Finances/other scholarships/gifts:James has received no money yet, and his school music budget is currently at $0. The registration fee for the conference is $699.
Transportation: James will need to fly to Washington D.C.
Housing: He will stay in a hotel with other honor choir students, probably provided for by the $699 registration fee
Food: He will likely need to pay for his own food, and will need to find funds for that as well.
Organizations/Support Network: MENC, http://www.mencevents.org/index2.htm West Albany High School (with a very limited budget), anyone I can find!

I just wanted to let you know that James was able to attend this event and reported it to be life changing. He received local and broad support, including an anonymous donation to the school's music department. I'm confident he will continue to be a leader both at his school, and in the musical world. Thanks for helping make his dream public, and supporting him!
