Birthday Cake

Hey Tom!

Ok...Daniel, my brother, is a very good baker, and for his birthday he wanted to make his own birthday cake. Now this isn't just any cake. This is a supreme chocolate cake served in New York's finest cafe' called Serendipity. Have you ever seen that movie? It's the same place...and we have the cookbook of its very best desserts.

It's a four level chocolate cake to die for. We've made it before, and it takes four hours to do. My sister, Daniel and I have just spent the last four hours having our own party in the kitchen, talking, watching half a movie, and watching Daniel make this cake. It's a serious process, making sure the butter is at the right temperature to be combined with the sugar, etc. It's truly amazing.

Ok, so this won't be as funny as it was in real life... when it came out of the oven after letting it cool, he stacked the layers on top of each other and it looked great. But all of a sudden it started to tilt...

and tilt... and tilt... and seriously, it was hilarious how hard we tried to save this cake. We thought we'd put it in the fridge to firm up. Five minutes later we opened the fridge to see a huge quarter of the cake drooped down over our goat milk container.

We laughed and laughed and brought it out and tried again and again. Maybe this maybe that. Every time it just crumbled more.

So! Now we have a huge mash of cake in a lasagna pan that looks relatively similar to oversized brownies. We have cake on all counters and surfaces, and all over the floor. I'm happy to announce that it is still quite delicious.

Oh man that was a great party.
